I don’t believe in fairytales

Girls, and boys, grow up with fairytales. We were filled with positive thoughts, dreams, and hopes.

And then reality hit us when we’re growing up. Things are never easy. Things are not beautiful. After tears and letdowns, sometimes there’s still no happy ending. After crying because the evil stepmom never allowed us to go to the party, there’s still no fairy godmother coming and helping to meet the prince. There’s never a perfect thing in the world.

But sometimes we hold so dear to the thoughts that there really is a perfect thing. Perfect relationship. Perfect friendship. Perfect life. Perfect luck.

When do hopes become false hopes? When do dreams become unrealistic dreams? When do you draw the line?

I guess no one knows the exact answer, but I believe that people should, at some point of time, stop for a while and look at the big picture.

Somehow, I think, part of growing up is really knowing that fairytales don’t exist. Knowing that hopes and dreams, no matter how beautiful, can be impossible sometimes. Preparing for the worst. Getting ready for the unimaginable.

I’m not saying that I’ve stopped dreaming though. I think what still keeps me going is my own dream of seeing better days.

But I’ve stopped believing in fairytales. I’ve stopped hoping that everything is going to be fine, everything is going to be more or less perfect.

Things don’t happen that way and I’m glad that I know it early.

And at the same time I’m also sad. Innocence has lost. Please welcome, the bitter and cold me.

Fairytales, go to hell.

Jing!

Jing!

I was trying out this software called JingProject. Basically it’s a software to capture your screen. Not only image, it can also make video, capturing what you’re doing in your computer. And it’s totally free!

And here’s my first video called : How to Plurk!

Quick review:

I think it’s a great software! However the sharing option baffled me. I wanted to keep a copy of my capture in my hard disk and I also wanted to upload it into screencast.com. However, after saving a copy in my hard disk, I pressed the button to get it uploaded into screencast and it just refused to do so!

Another disadvantage is that the output file can only be in swf. Most of video sharing websites don’t support uploading swf.

So…

What do you think about Jing? Do you guys have any similar software to share?

Where is home?

Home. One word, four letters. How big is a word that can make me confused and insecure? Only a four-letter word.

So which one should I call home? After 2 years in Singapore, I know I’m very comfortable living here. I miss Singapore when I’m back in Jakarta, and vice versa.

But somehow I think people that claim to be the “native” of places that I’ve lived in don’t really think I should live in the same place with them.

I remember vividly May 1998. How can I ever forget it. (read my reminiscence here) I was barely 9 years old but I can feel the hatred directed to me. To my people. We, the people with fairer skin that live in a fairly big house and go to private school. They say we’re stealing their welfare. They say we’re stealing their jobs. We’ve made them deprived of better life.

I remember how I was made to pay more for my food because of who I am. I remember uncovering a letter of “citizenship confirmation” with my dad’s name on it. Dad said he had to do it because it was compulsory that time. I remember being called names and being whistled at when I’m walking down a street.

Some still accuse us of being snobbish and arrogant because we’re not down-to-earth or in other words refusing to befriend so-called “native” people. Well here’s a shocking truth for you : we’re not. But considering what your so-called brothers in race did to us, it’s natural for us to stay cautious, right?

I moved to Singapore, and ha ha, guess what. I found out that the so-called locals don’t really like us either. “Us” now refers to people who moved to Singapore in search of better place to study, to work, to live. Well how lucky I am to be in the “unwanted” category again?

But ha ha ha. Guess what, Singaporeans. Your government has decided to give me a tuition grant that waived me 60 (that spells SIXTY) percent of my tuition fees, with only condition that requires me to work in any Singapore listed company for 3 years.

I posed this question to Mr. Peter Ho (a member of parliament – sorry I forgot what the exact title of his job is), who came to SMU to deliver a talk titled 4 myths of public service.

“What do you think of the current state, where there are so many migrants coming to Singapore? Do you think it will influence or maybe change public policy in the future?”

It is pretty much a yes-no question, but he answered like this: (paraphrased)

“Well you must remember that Singapore has always been a migrant community. That’s what we’re built upon. So, no, there will be no change whatsoever because Singapore is already a migrant community. I guess Singaporeans must put their emotions aside and accept foreign talents”

So when will Singaporeans, the people born in Singapore, think like Mr Peter Ho? Accept that I, like many other people here, am here not to steal the bowl of rice, but to share it. After all, I believe I and many other people like me are not that evil. We’re thankful of what Singapore has given us. Like, of course, our 60% cut of tuition fees. haha. But really. If I’m asked to give back something to Singapore, I will. It’s not that I’m betraying my country. It’s just being gracious.

I’m pleased to say, though, that I see my current generation is becoming more and more “bonded” together regardless of race or whatever things that differentiate us. I’m glad to say that I mingle easily with Singaporeans, and I have no problem whatsoever communicating to so-called “native” of Indonesia.

Will we see a big change as my current generation grows older? We shall see.. What do you think?

And meanwhile, I’m still confused on which to call home. Maybe I should just call both home. That’d be fair. ;)

The (slightly) longest day in a week

part of NaBloPoMo 2008

part of NaBloPoMo 2008

This term, Tuesday is my longest day ever. I had one Monday about 2 terms ago that was also so long because I had 3 concurrent courses at one day. This term’s Tuesday doesn’t have 3 concurrent courses, but equally, if not more, tiring.

So I have a morning class at 8.30 AM. People who know me will surely know that I’m just not a morning person. Don’t get me wrong, I CAN wake up, but whether I can “function properly”, that’s a whole different story. Today was worse than ever. My “best friend” called insomnia kept knocking on my door again last night, and I could only fall asleep at about 5 AM. And I had to wake up at 7 AM! Darn. So I did. Unwillingly I dragged my ass to school.

Class finished at 11.45 AM. Usually after class, I would have a meeting from around 12 PM to around 2 PM. However I didn’t have any meeting today, meeting was cancelled coz the groupmates couldn’t make it. This explains the (slightly) in the title. Hehe.

It didn’t mean I could slack though. Went to the lab to do stuff. And class (at the same lab) finally began at 3.30 PM. Tried so hard to catch what’s being talked about but gave up. La di da. La di da di da.

“Please go outside to enjoy the buffet”

Wha…?

Whoa seriously! My kind professor (and now I feel bad for not listening….) treated the whole class a buffet dinner! Om nom nom nom.

Couldn’t remember what happened between finishing eating and finishing class. Hahahaha. Anyway, after class finished at 6.45 PM, it was time for choir practice. Argh.

Don’t get me wrong, I like singing in choir. After all I chose to be in the choir and had been staying for more than a year. It’s just that.. The practice time just doesn’t suit my body time. You want to know the other practice day for choir? Saturday morning. Argh.

It was election day to select new choir exco and we’re so excited to know the results this Saturday!

And now here I am, typing this, and will proceed to finish this hellish long day.

While I’m finishing my long day, our folks in USA are also having a long day.

I just hope they’ll vote wisely and whatever the crowd’s decision is, it’s for the best.

Are you excited about the result? ;)

Crazy Weather

Man, seriously, what the heck is wrong with the weather?

I walked to the bus stop this afternoon with my bf and was complaining non-stop about how hot and bright the sun is. It’s not that I’m afraid of getting tanned or wrinkles or whatsoever, it’s just super uncomfortable having the heat “biting” your skin.

So I shielded myself behind my bf and after quite a long wait our bus came.

And guess what! When we alighted from the bus, suddenly you could hear thunder and the sky darkened.

Man seriously! It started pouring after that.

Wonder why.. Is it because the sun was so bright and hot, it sped up the evaporation of the water (particularly the sea)? Then it quickly formed clouds and whatnots and so it rained?

Haha I said I hated science but you can’t really get away from it when you learned it for 6 years. Hahaha.

So how’s the weather in where you live? ;)

Boy, did they answer my prayers!

part of NaBloPoMo 2008

Since moving to Singapore I sometimes face difficulty of finding a church to go to. Well back in Jakarta my siblings and I (plus my cousin) will all go to this one church nearby our place at one time. So never once I missed church.

However it’s hard to be that discipline in Singapore. After so many projects and whatnots I tend to oversleep on weekends. That includes Sundays. So it’s like a very familiar scenario for me to wake up on a Sunday afternoon and ohshitting coz I missed the church.

However, the wonderful thing is that there are many Catholic churches in Singapore (I’m a Catholic and thus can go to any Catholic church to attend the mass) spread around the island. The next wonderful thing is that since it’s spread around, you’re bound to find a (Catholic) church near your place and that it’s easy to travel there.

The next wonderful thing is the website Veritas that is the official website of the Archdiocese of Singapore and lists the Catholic churches in Singapore, complete with the address, phone number, the names of the priests, the website of the church, and the directions! This is not an advertisement. I really respect their effort to list all of the churches.

So what I usually did is to browse around Veritas for the churches that has a mass on later time (since I missed the earlier one, you see..). However, it usually took damn long coz I needed to open the churches’ pages one by one to check the schedule.

One of ping.sg member, pausmiling, mentioned some time ago about the revamped website. However I still complained that it still takes me a long while just to find the mass timings.

Boy did they answer my prayers or what! Or maybe I overlooked the feature when I first surfed the revamped website. They actually DO have this nifty section called Mass Schedules.

Categorized into sections based on the day and the time of the mass!

Yayness!

I typed this after finding a church to go to for afternoon mass (yes I missed the earlier masses…). Found it here! Will be going to Cathedral of Good Shepherd‘s 6 PM mass.

A big kudos to the team that revamped the website!

I wish you all a great Sunday and a great week tomorrow!

Here I come, November

And so NaBloPoMo starts. Here I am with the first post for this month!

It was, like usual, a busy day. I’m always busy on Saturday. Choir at morning (which I attended late because of my stupid morning stomachache that made me go to the toilet back and forth). Sang 2 tango songs. Very emotional. And tiring.

Then I had brunch at a dim sum place in Sunshine Plaza. I think it was called Victor’s Kitchen. Great dim sum although it’s sad that the waitresses can only speak Chinese. Bah. Went back to school to do EWS (Enterprise Web Solutions) assignment. We’re supposed to create an enrichment course portal. I realized we started late and I realized there’s SO MUCH to be done, but I hope we can strive anyway.

OTW to EWS computer lab (which is, strangely, located in School of Economics/School of Social Sciences. Huh.), I remembered that there’s Podcamp Singapore going on. I intended to attend the event religiously but hell the things that I need to get done was just eating me up. So I thought, ah hell I’ll just drop by and say hi to some blogger friends and then go. So I went to the room. Saw DK, Farinelli, Miccheng, Claudia present. Daphne went out to talk to me (and to go toilet) and told me that I should just go in. It was 12.56 PM and the talk is supposed to be over at 1.00 PM so I thought, again, ah what the heck, just barge in and wait until it’s over, and then I can mingle around with blogger friends, and go.

“Sorry it’s already 1 PM and time’s up”
“Ah sorry, just 1 more question. Very short.”

La di da. As I checked the clock, it was 1.25 PM.

Immediately went off from the room and said hi-bye to bloggers and rushed off to the lab. Helping to search for automatic way to create website after an event happened (in Microsoft Share Point – the urgh thing, I might say).

A friend, Olivia, came to the lab and told everyone that today is another friend, Edwin’s bday! She bought a cake and told us to go out and celebrate.

She took picture of my EWS group and the cake!

Yes I know my hair looks hideous. GAH.

Happy birthday Edwin Tan!

And it was time for my piano lesson! And guess what! I didn’t bring my piano books to school! Yeay!

Sigh. Lucky I realized it quite early so I rushed off from the lab and went to the bus stop to catch the bus home. Waited and waited until at least 15 minutes. I turned impatient. Checked SBS Iris and HA HA HA, GUESS WHAT. SBS Iris next bus : 10 minutes. You gotta be kidding me.

Anyway bus came and I went home and took my piano books and I quickly flagged a cab to get me to the piano lesson place. (this is an attempt of shortening sentences. I realize I did too many things)

Piano lesson finished, bf picked me up and we ate at Ayam Penyet Ria at Square 2! YEAY! <3

Photo by Shellfish. Hehe! I didn’t have time to take photo coz I just tucked in!

Oh well.. What a busy day it was! Imagine how busy the rest of November will be! I have another blog to update for NaBloPoMo so I’ll leave you guys with a video of one of the tangoes I sang : Adios Nonino.

Background of the video : it was played during the church wedding of Prince Willem-Alexander (of the Netherlands) and Maxima Zorreguieta. Maxima was born in Argentina and Adios Nonino (meaning : Goodbye, Father) is a popular song from Argentina written by Astor Piazzolla after his father passed away.

Such a sad, depressing song yet beautiful..
