Happy Chinese New Year

It’s Chinese New Year. Gong Xi Fa Cai, Wan Shi Ru Yi for you who are celebrating. I’m not really sure what it means, but yeah, that’s what people say to each other on Chinese New Year.

I saw a bunch of people near my home. Not a big surprise, since my home at Waterloo Street is very close to this famous Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple..

Seeing them, doing their things, just made me wanna go home.

And what I’m doing? Stuck in this messy room, blogging through my laptop. Sigh. What chinese new year?

Anyway, I went to the Esplanade to see the fireworks earlier. Pretty. I should have seen it with someone special.. You know.. that kind of “special”. But never mind, my friends who went with me are special too. =)

But I really want to be home. My last time going back was kinda traumatic, but still. I want to go home. Right. This. Second.

No wonder I failed…. according to statistics.

note : this is for entertainment purposes only. Nothing to be taken seriously.

I got 4 out of 10 for my STAT101 (Statistics) quiz. So sad. Curious about how I did so badly (like other students in my class), I tried to analyze it.Multiple choice questions are examples of Bernoulli Trial. There are only 2 possible outcomes : right or wrong. According to what I learned in stats, to calculate how big is the probability to get a certain number of successes in a certain number of experiments, we need to use Binomial Distribution.

Confused? Don’t be. :D

Regarding my MCQ-style test, I had 10 questions on the test. Now, to calculate the probability of having all of the questions answered right, we should use Binomial Distribution.

Binomial Distribution is represented by :

where

(or maybe better known as nCk)

while
n = the number of experiments.
k = the number of successes, can be modified according to our need. (For example if we want to calculate the probability of getting 2 answers right, the k will be 2, and so on)
p = the probability of success in each experiment.

In the case of my MCQ stats quiz which had 10 questions with four choices each, thus :

n = the number of questions, which is 10.
k = 10 (since we want to calculate the probability of getting all the answers right)
p = since there are 4 choices, the probability is 1 out of 4 (1/4)

Okay, now let’s start the calculation..

Let X denote the number of getting the answer of the question right.

Then

Since 10C10 results as 1 and so does 3/4 to the power of 0, what’s left is 1/4 to the power of 10.

And the result is…………………

(use the google calculator, or your own calculator, if you’re too curious)

………………………………. (the tension continues)

9.53674316 × 10-7 which equals to 9.53674316 × 10-5 percent.

Ha.

So the probability of having all answers right from 4 choices, ten questions MCQ test is just 9.53674316 × 10-5 percent.

No wonder I failed.

additional note : the p is only 1/4 when we really really randomly choose. My bad. :D But FYI, for that stats quiz I really did randomly choose several numbers.

Happy Valentine’s Day…

Happy Valentine’s day everybody…. Not going to post something like Valentine’s day is overrated, or the amusing facts of Valentine’s day, or the history of Valentine’s day..  Blah blah blah. All I hope is that you all share your love for everybody who deserves it…

Don’t worry be happy.

Regards,
the SINGLE Sylv

Here’s a little song I wrote
You might want to sing it note for note
Don’t Worry — Be Happy
In every life we have some trouble
But when you worry you make it Double
Don’t Worry — Be Happy
Ain’t got no place to lay your head,
somebody came and took your bed
Don’t Worry, Be Happy
The landlord say your rent is late,
he may have to litigate
Don’t Worry — Be Happy
Ain’t got not cash, ain’t got no style,
ain’t got no gal to make you smile
Don’t Worry — Be Happy
Cause when you worry your face will frown
and that will bring everybody down
Don’t Worry — Be Happy

5 Things You Didn’t Know About Me

In ping.sg this meme has gone around for a while. No I wasn’t tagged by anyone, but I saw this meme here. Haha. Hi chillycraps =D

Let’s start, shall we?

1. I have Dayak blood. It’s inherited from my mom, who was born in Borneo. Mom said my great grandmother, or great great great great grandmother was a Dayak. My mom even said that the Dayak characteristics are very evident in me (the physical evidence). I dunno. Just look for dayak woman pictures and compare my picture. Don’t compare me to this one, of course, since I don’t weight my ears.

Dayak woman weight their ears because their beauty is measured by the length of their ear lobes. I can’t prove this now actually, since my google search always ends up in eBay page that sells the rings which are used to elongate the ear lobes. Duh.

2. I never watched the trilogy of The Lord of The Rings. Not once. Really. I dunno why. –; I know a bit of the story line though. :p
Hmm. Is this the right picture? XP

3. I bite my nails regularly. Thus I don’t need any nail clippers. Believe me, they look neat and nice. Oh, and short.
No, not my nails. XP

4. My mother once suspended my right to possess a cellphone. It was because I used it to be lovey-dovey and cutey-cuddly (whatever that means) with my former boyfriend. Hahaha. I still want to laugh if I remember that. XD
Siemens M35i, the phone that got suspended. =P

5. I have been able to read since I was 2. Instead of giving me toys to play or taking me out for a walk, my parents decided to teach me how to read. Hahahaha. Wonderful!
I’m not a Caucasian though…

Anybody to continue this meme?

Professor of Spamming

It’s a usual thing for me to get hundreds of spams everyday. But when I checked my Akismet spam box today, there are several spams that caught my eye :

(click to enlarge. Portions blacked out to protect privacy.)

They caught my eye because the URL provided is a .edu URL, which means it’s an address of an educational institution. And well, I checked salisbury.edu to check whether it is a fake, and turned out it’s a real university.

I then checked the more specific URL. The URL leads to a personal page of Salisbury University’s faculty member. Not bad. Professor of Finance. Hm.

I already sent him an e-mail informing this (there is a possibility he’s been infected by a virus/spyware anyway). Wonder what will he reply..

We’ll see.
